How to Love Yourself
Being able to love yourself starts with self-acceptance. Coming to terms with who you are and accepting yourself fully plays a huge part in finding happiness in life.
Each one of us is here for a reason and we also have the necessary resources within ourselves to develop beyond whatever our current reality may be. We are all here, in the words of Walt Whitman,”to contribute a verse”
So that you can begin to appreciate yourself think about the qualities and talents that make you unique. Think about the things you do really well and acknowledge your achievements.
It s not about you being big headed or arrogant it’s about recognising the gifts you have and choosing to celebrate them.
Give yourself approval –often in life we wait for others to approve of who we are and what we do but really the person whose approval matters most in your life is your own. Until you love yourself, you will not be able to love anyone else. You can only love another to the degree that you do yourself.
How to get started
Start by investing in and working on your personal growth and development. Work on being the best version of yourself. You have the potential and capability to develop and rise above whatever conditions and obstacles are put in your path.
If you want to take a class or start a fitness plan then start. Don’t wait for New Year’s Eve or until some milestone in life. Start now!
A little change every day, one page of writing that novel you’ve been promising yourself you will write for the last 10 years, introducing a daily 20 minute walk into your daily regime. They may be small changes but the results build. By the end of a year you have 365 page book, maybe you are 10lbs lighter the point is that you have developed and made improvements on where you are now.
Take care of yourself physically, mentally and emotionally. Eat sensibly, get enough sleep, drink enough water, go for walks. You have one amazing body which looks after you every day of your life so return the favour and care for it.
Just as your body needs nourishment and exercise so does your mind. Stimulate it by learning about new and interesting subjects or skills and conscientiously devote time to personal growth just as you would to an exercise regime.
Acknowledge your spiritual needs, they are often what provide meaning in our lives and help us put things into context.
Examine your values in life and think about what really matters to you. Are you living in alignment with your beliefs and values? If not what changes you can make that will allow you to do so? Do you want to get involved in community projects or raise money for a charity that means a lot to you? Again the changes don’t need to be big to make a big difference in the long term. Taking care of your spiritual needs rejuvenates you and connects you to the world around you on a much deeper level as well as helping you deal with life’s daily stress and challenges.
When you love yourself, you invest in your personal growth and development and by doing so you are confirming to yourself that you are of value, and that you are worth investing in. From that point confidence and contentment will be far easier to achieve .
